Another Mystery Dahlia Reveals Itself
One of the most exciting parts of growing dahlias from seed is that every bloom is a surprise.
Unlike planting a dahlia tuber, which produces the exact same variety year after year, planting dahlia seeds is a little like opening a mystery package. Because dahlias readily cross-pollinate, each seed contains a unique combination of genetics from its parent plants. That means every seedling has the potential to produce a flower with its own colour, form, size, and personality—something that has never existed before.
This week, another one of our mystery seedlings has opened its very first bloom, just in time for Canada Day, and it's a beautiful rich red! 🍁

It's still early, so we'll be watching closely as more flowers open to see if the colour stays consistent, how the blooms mature, and whether this seedling earns a place in our field for future seasons. Some seedlings bloom once and are quickly forgotten, while others are so special that they're carefully saved and grown on from their tubers.
You can tell us what you think of this seedling by leaving a comment below or voting in our seedling polls on our facebook page.
This is part of the magic of growing dahlias from seed—every first bloom is a reveal, and every reveal could be the beginning of a brand-new variety.
We can't wait to see what the next mystery plant has in store!
